"A powerful, at times unforgettable, documentary... The blend of archival news footage with his (Ariel Dorfman) personal, vivid memories is exemplary and beautifully done. It's utterly compelling, ... a must-see because you soon learn that it's about more than Chile. It's about how the world works."- John Doyle, The Globe and Mail

World Inter-Action Mondiale
is proud to screen "A Promise to the Dead", a brilliant documentary that follows the playwright Ariel Dorfman as he returns to the streets of Chile from exile in the United States, and then brings to life vivid scenes of the traumatic political power struggle that evolved in the 1970s. Dorfman was cultural adviser to Allende when the Pinochet coup took
Chile by storm on September 11, 1973 (35 years this week). The title is taken from his statement made while facing death in the streets, that if he survived, he would make "a promise to the dead - that I would live and tell their story."

It's a powerful reminder of a time mere decades ago, when Henry Kissinger is alleged to have said, "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people". A few years after the coup, the world would learn of the death and repression that tortured
Chile apart under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Wonderfully crafted by Canadian director Peter Raymont ("Shake Hands with the Devil"), this film tells a compelling story of personal exile, painful memories, and joyful re-unions, while intimately exploring the dynamic political forces that scarred both Dorfman and the people of Chile.

Call for Submissions: 2009 De Colores Festival of New Works. A Latin Canadian Playwright's Festival. Alameda Theatre Company invites submissions from established and emerging playwrights for the 2nd annual Latin Canadian playwright's festival: THE 2009 DE COLORES FESTIVAL OF NEW WORKS.

The festival will focus on providing developmental support for works in progress by pairing the chosen playwrights with professional dramaturgs from
Toronto's theatre community. This year's festival dramaturgs are Stephen Colella, Dramaturg at Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People and Erica Kopyto, dramaturg working with PEN Canada/ARC Fest and the Writers in Exile program. Our mandate is to provide opportunities to Latin Canadian theatre artists and playwrights and to build audiences for their work. Our goal is for Latin American arts and artists to be embraced by a broad Canadian community that is aware of, understands and respects the Latin-American Canadian experience.

Scripts selected for the 2009 De Colores Festival of New Works will receive dramaturgical support and a workshop period that will culminate in a staged reading in April 2009. Work in the festival will automatically be short-listed for production in our upcoming seasons. Selected playwrights will be contacted by November 2008.
