"He makes the music that makes our ancient soul dance. Rob Curto is a musician playing in our time the voices of
time past -of smiling faces, of moving bodies, of shoes stirring the dust beneath them to celebrate this gentle existence -
of forró, of music, of opening the self like a tropical flower, delivering ourselves to the dance." -- Lila Downs, Musician.
"Forró...is fast becoming the city's coolest new flavor. Accordionist Rob Curto is one of the cats responsible
for it's sudden jump in local popularity." -- Time Out New York.
"Rob Curto is North American, but, from the way he plays accordion, he sounds like a son of Brazil." -- Correio Brasiliense.
The band’s founding member Rob Curto, an accordionist well versed in jazz, has spent years intimately involved with this music and culture. He studied with Arlindo dos Oito Baixos, Camarão and Silveirinha, all great accordionists from Recife, Brazil and with Paraibano Alencar 7-Cordas. Rob keeps as his bible the work of Dominguinhos, Sivuca, Oswaldinho, Hermeto Pascoal and of course the great Luiz Gonzaga. He has spent years playing in Brazil, and developed a reputation there as an extremely competent and artistic forró accordionist. In addition his work includes playing and collaboration with heavy-weights of world music such as Lila Downs, David Krakauer, Cyro Baptista, Frank London and Omar Faruk Tekbilek.
Rob has brought together a team of some of New York’s best musicians: Pedro Ramos from São Paulo Brazil who is the leading proponent of Brazil’s choro music in the United States. Scott Kettner, a percussionist who has brought the sound of Maracatu from Recife, Pernambuco to the United States and has studied the music from that region. Davi Vieira, from Bahia, one of the most sought after Brazilian percussionists in the United States and Mike LaValle, who through his extensive experience in Brazil has become a virtual library of Brazilian music and musical styles. Together, these musicians have created a sound which deeply respects the traditions of forró pé-de-serra and it’s greatest masters, yet also brings a fresh perspective with copious improvisation, original compositions and innovations both rhythmic and harmonic.
